| As
you can imagine, videotape of Dr. San Guinary and episodes of CREATURE
FEATURE are very hard to come by. Having been produced from 1971-1981,
and the revolution of the affordable vcr for home use happening around
1982-83, you can see how these events/moments just narrowly missed
each other.
So, when you fdo find a tape feature Dr. San
Guinary, it is enevitably from those few folks who could afford
those old dinasaur vcr's and just happen to remember or find by
accident that they captured a few moments of Dr. San Guinary on
tape. Around Omaha, amongst fans of my age those moments are priceless.
Featured below are some
of the clips that are currently circulating around Omaha fans.
Thanks go to Jason Jones, the son of John Jones, for
providing me with nearly an hour's worth of outtakes, bloopers and
"bumpers" you will see below. They are the files in the Real Media
format. In order to view them , you will need to download Real
Player G2
NOTE: Most CREATURE FEATURE video seems to come
from people directly associated with KMTV. Local fans of the show
seem to only have video from many of the Doctor's other appearances
outside of CREATURE FEATURE. I have no explaination for this other
than the problem of home vcr's not being readily available during
CREATURE FEATURE'S hey day.

Though not labeled as such, I suspect that this
is possibly one of the earliest surviving bumpers for CREATURE FEATURE.
It's definately the earliest I have seen turn up. Jones is doing
the "creepy ghoul" thing for San Guinary still, not having developed
the funny persona we would all enjoy for years to come.

Funny blooper with the Doctor in front of his "time
machine". Definately too adult for CREATURE FEATURE...

Nifty bumper that features a nice shot of the lab
and a guest appearance by the actor who played the sheriff in those
famous C.W. McCall/"Old Home Bread" commercials from the seventies.

Doc explains to Frank the Gangster (who I can't
remember the actor's name at this time) what a Spook-a-rama kit is
all about.

In this rare out take, we get to see San Guinary
and KMTV news anchor Jeff Jordan shooting a commercial for the Jerry
Lewis Labor Day Telethon with Jerry Lewis himself. San's humor makes
this take unusable...

In this commercial we see the doctor promoting
both the telethon and an early Spook-a-Rama kit while Jerry Lewis
looks completely uncomfortable. This is an early commercial done around
the time that Jones was still doing the doctor as a kind of "scary"
ghoul character. It's odd.

Here's one of the many appearances of Omaha Ex-Mayor
Gene Leahy on CREATURE FEATURE.

It's a battle of egos (and a continuation of the
previous bumper) as San & Gene prove to each other who is the real
power behind CREATURE FEATURE.

Final bumper for the show, Gene and San make up.

Spiffy little bumper features the doctor's spirit
talking about the evening's movie.

This blooper features one of the official Dr. San
Guinary t-shirts as being sported by KMTV weather anchor Carol Scott,
of whom I had a HUGE crush on when I was young (Carol still lives
in Omaha and manufacturers a line of high-performance thermal long
underwear on the internet which can be seen at www.cdsportswear.com).

In this funny bumper, actor James Drury ("The Virginian")
promotes Dr. San Guinary as the next interim Mayor. Funny stuff...

Unfortunately this is kind of disjoined, but it
is a farewell to a member of the KMTV staff (specifically the CREATURE
FEATURE staff).

This bumper aired during "Earth v.s. The Spider"
and features the doctor with slicked back hair trying to pick up local
celebrity Casey the Dodge Girl at a 50's sock hop.

Continuation of the previous bumper, San strikes out with Casey (apparently).

Featuring "Mavis" from the classic 70's C.W. McCall/"Old
Home Bread" commercials.

San Guinary as a super hero. My oh my.

Continuatuion of the above bumper.

Living in Omaha, Ne in the early seventies meant
you heard A LOT of car dealer commercials. This is the doctor's take
on it all.

Continuation of the above bumper.

During the movie "The Tingler" Dr. San Guinary
hosts a decidedly un-p.c. game show. Dig that guy's groovy threads
at the opening!
In the early 80's, John hosted a Saturday afternoon
show which ran the famous sleuth's movies. Oddly, most of the video
footage that is available to Dr. San Guinary fans are usually from
this show. These clips are in the Quicktime format.
-
- In this clip, Doc displays his decidedly non-p.c.
opinion about the Sherlock Holmes film he is running.
-
- An example of a rather...um, adult
situation that popped up rather frequently on CREATURE FEATURE
and here on the SHERLOCK HOLMES THEATER (and would never happen
on similar shows today). Dig this crazy blond's t-shirt.
-
- In this brief clip, The Doctor is interviewing
Ms. Mavis Marvel for the position of "assistant detective".
Quick quip that I rather enjoyed.
