Jamie Murray's Unpublished Creature Feature Photos
They say the world is a very small place these days. I have proof of that here.
I have known Jamie Murray for about five years now. He is a tremendous artist that i have had the pleasuree of talking to at a science fiction convention in Springfield, Missouri called Visioncon. At the convention, Jamie mentions to me that he had a chance to visit my homepage, and through that visit this website.
It was then that he told me that he used to work for KMTV and that he had actually helped produce bumpers for Creature Feature. I was completely blown away... i had no idea.
He was amazed to find all of the photos and videos... mainly because some of the materials here were eitherphotographed by him or directed by him!
It is indeed a small world.
Jamie worked for KMTV in the seventies as a floor director and part-time photographer. He shot photos of the news crew, celebrities and other personalities, which were used for promotional materials. Some of the photos Jamie shot were of John Jones on the set of Creature Feature doing Dr. San Guinary as they recorded some bumpers for the show. Some were to be used for promotional materials, and others were for the heck of it.
When Jamie saw that i had a Dr. San Guinary website, he graciously offered to donate the photos for use on the site, in order to share this rare memorabilia with everyone who would be interested.

In this sequence of photos, Dr. San Guinary is preparing for shooting a cooking contest bumper. He is seen here in appropriate cooking garb framed by the old “mystery machine” set used through the seventies.

The “mystery machine” set is better viewed in this image, while Doc arranges his props for the segment prior to taping of the bumper. On the left hand lower corner of this photo you can see a vending machine coffee cup. The odd coloring of the photo is due to the lighting and subsequent darkness of the CREATURE FEATURE set.

A quick rundown of the skit before preparing to tape it. This slightly upward angle shot allows for viewing of the top portion of the set (which previously I had never seen) and some of the older Creature Feature set props (whioch can be seen over Doc’s left arm).

Another angle during the same bumper taping.

Yet another angle on the same bumper shoot. Over Doc’s left shoulder you can see the tiny “Live” and “Dead” signs on the “mystery machine” prop, and in the pot in front of Doc you can see the top of the container for the infamous 70’s toy Slime.

Another bumper for the same episode, Doc tries to coax some Slime out of it’s green plastic container for use in this bumper. Pictured here is a contestant for the Nebraska Beauty Pagent.

Plop! Doc drops pieces of Slime into his bowl.

Doc reacts to the slimey cold feeling Slime had… yuck. As an odd sidenote, the toy was terribly popular in the late seventies/ early eighties and spawned other versions like Slime with Eyes and Slime With Worms, and it came in a variety of colors. Also odd, it was given a variety of pleasant scents like banana. Aaah yummy.

Good ol’ big wad of Slime ready to hit the bowl.

Shooting begins as Doc messing around with the green gross stuff.

This photo shows why Slime was so popular. It was discontinued due to it’s inherit mix of home destroying qualities (rugs would be stained by it, or it would dry up when left out of the container… usually on couches or other expensive items, Of course, i had some. :)

A behind-the-camera shot of John preparing for the bumper.

Doc drinks a frothy concotion. This photo and the following two images were originally shot for possible postcards for KMTV to give out as promotional pieces.

Another angle of the same drink.

Sometimes guests on Creature Feature were actual celebrities. In the next set of pictures actress Marcia Wallace (of The Bob Newhart Show and, more recently, Comedy Central’s That’s My Bush!) makes a visit to the set.

A behind-the-scenes photo of Marcia prepping for the bumper to be taped.

Marcia poses with Doc on the set. According to Jamie, Marcia was in town doing some dinner theater at the time and stopped in to promote the play.

Another shot of Marcia and Doc together.

In this photo Doc is getting ready for the next bumper while his guests, local contestants for a beauty contest, look on. In this photo you can see Igor’s “cage” (marked with a sign that reads “Beware of wild beasts!”) . The low lighting on the set is the reason for the high contrast in this photo.

A sweet young thing looks on as Doc pontificates to them. She’s smiling an awful lot… i guess the doctor isn’t really THAT scary… :). Being on Creature Feature was considered as cool thing back in the heyday of the show, and a lot of local folks would appear on it to promote local events.
