I did have the privilege
of meeting John Jones as a youngster. My father owned the Mermaid
Lounge at 33rd and Leavenworth during the 1970s and John was a regular.
Until I was seven or eight, I always gave "the Doctor"
a cautious eye because he always kept a "scary" eye on
me and gave me that "Aa aah" while winking to my dad.
They both loved to see me scurry off to back of the bar in sheer
terror. By the time I was nine, I finally got the nerve to sit by
John and talk with him. Afterwards, he was never scary when I saw
him at the bar, but every bit as scary on television.
After KMTV moved
to its present location at 108th and Mockingbird Dr., my dad coincidentally
closed his bar on Leavenworth and opened Sam's Lounge at 96th and
Mockinbird Dr. However, John and the KMTV gang spent most of their
time hanging out at the Mai Tai Lounge across the street from the
station, but John would occasionally come to my dad's bar. It was
always a treat when he came in the door.
I
was saddened with the passing of John back in 1988. It's hard to
believe that it's coming on nine years since his death. When I think
back to my childhood, one of my top memories will be staying up
late on Saturday night to see what Dr. San Guinary and Igor were
going to do. It would usually end up being the first topic of conversation
come Mondays at school.
