Omaha, NE – He had a knack for making your stomach turn, then a minute later, giggle. Even the ladies liked Dr. San Guinary. His regular Saturday night program, Creature Feature here on KMTV Action 3 News ran from 1971 to 1982. John Jones, the man behind the make-up died six years later.
“Unfortunately when John passed away, a little slice of Omaha was lost,” says Omaha TV historian Chris Palmer.
The creepy, yet lovable Dr. San Guinary is back from the grave. He lives on with Palmer’s nearly perfect interpretation, “Let’s bring it back in some capacity. See if it’s got wings. It’s just been a beautiful thing today.”
“This is bigger and better than anything we could have asked for,” says the original San Guinary’s son Josh Jones.
But more importantly than Jones ghoulishly comedic character, his love for Jerry’s Kids.
“Besides Halloween, this was his day of the year,” says Josh Jones.
Jones passion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association helped raise thousands of dollars every year. During this year’s telethon, Palmer donned the make-up and shtick.
“Well the kids have a natural curiosity for good looking people like myself,” says Palmer in character.
Keeping Jones’ passion for helping children alive 22 year after his death, “Apparently nostalgia runs very deep in Omaha for Dr. San Guinary,” says palmer.
This years MDA telethon raised $59,000 nationwide; Omaha pledges and donations have already exceeded $400,000.
