UPDATE (7/27/99)
Welcome to the first update report for the DR. SAN GUINARY WEBLAB in quite
a long time. The last major renovation this site got was back in 1997 with
a design change and a few additional features. To be honest, this site had
been put onto the back burner for quite awhile because the changes I
wanted to impliment weren't practical for the way I wanted to update this
site.
BETTER ORGANIZATION
The biggest benefit of this overhaul is the reorganization of information
on the site. As the WebLab was the very first website I ever built, it's
coding was downright shitty and hard to look at. The organization barely
existed because of lack of planning on my part. Unstructured building of a
website makes for "frankenstien" websites... websites that have no
consistencies between it's own pages, bad design, poor choice of
elements...literally websites that look like they were "patched" together.
While the original website (which was two revisions back) wasn't the worst
website to grace the internet, it was damned near close. Now that I make
my living doing websites, it was an embarrasement. The last revision
wasn't by any means terrible... but it felt "stodgy" and out of date.
The coding definately was. In fact, the biggest obsticle to changing and
updating the site was facing the coding nightmare that I myself did. I
finally decided to drop the original pages and rebuild the site from
scratch. I think it worked out all right.
WHAT'S GONE...
In the revision I dropped the "forum" section, which was originally part
of the larger, parent web presence known as "The Expanse". The forum
hadn't been available since 1996 anyway, and when it was available, there
wasn't a great deal of response. I could rebuild a forum on my server, but
what's the point?
PERSONAL SERVER
I had always wanted to impliment a decent size archive of video clips and
sounds, but to do it the way I wanted would mean having a website that
took up nearly 100 megs of disk space, and last i checked, most ISP's only
give you five-ten megs storage space. That was too resrictive even to have
a few short clips thanks to the compression capabilities of just three
years ago.
Well that is no longer a problem. Recently I purchased a webserver of my
own, that I run from my studio here in Omaha, and now that I have a direct
line to the internet I can store as much media as my hard drive can hold
on it, providing you with a lot of video clips, sound files and images to
download for your use. Also, not having to compete for bandwidth on an
ISP's server, my pages now load up pretty darn quick. Like toot sweet.
VIDEO ARCHIVE
In the past few years, I have recieved a substantial boost in attaining
CREATURE FEATURE memorabilia from the Jones family themselves, who by
doing so helps the memory of John live on. Thanks to Jason Jones (John's
son) I have been able to add over 20 video files to the website. These
files are different than the ones presented prior because these files are
complete "bumpers" (the parts of CREATURE FEATURE which Dr. San Guinary
in them, before and after the commercial breaks) and not just a portion.
All of these files have been converted to ReaVideo format, which is a
sophisticated compression system capable of streaming video directly to
your browser. Right now, they aren't actually streaming files, as I need
to convert them, but they ARE highly compressed files you can download and
keep. Each file is around 1-4megs big, but once converted to streaming
size will not matter. I actually have a few more to add to the site, but I
haven't converted them to RealMedia yet.
AUDIO ARCHIVE
I finally transfered all of those CREATURE FEATURE audio files on those
old, decrepit cassette tapes I had to brand spankin' new tapes. The next
step will be to digitize them (probably MP3 format) and transfere those to
cd rom for future storage. Digital files don't degrade or wear out, and is
the safest way to keep items for a long time. Once I do that, I will make
them available here on the WebLab.
IMAGES ARCHIVE
This is the largest section on the site. I have combined all the old
"Scrapbook" sections with the "Postcard collection" section, and the
"Spookarama" section to create a large image directory of items for Dr.
San Guinary fans to download and enjoy. I have also added some ads a
friend of mine found on microfilm that were taken (i believe) from the
Omaha World-Herald t.v. section.
ARTICLES ARCHIVE
I have recently aquired the long lost article that ran in the Omaha
World-Herald that ran in April of 1988 about John Jones' battle with
cancer and more details on CREATURE FEATURE and it's eventual
cancellation. It features a rare picture of John without make-up at the
time of the article.
I also (finally) found Teresa Thomas' e-mail she sent me a couple of years ago in regards to her memories of Dr. San Guinary. Her father used to direct the show, so her e-mail is fraught with inside observations of CREATURE FEATURE.
I have had a lot of e-mails from the Jones family themselves, fron John's son Jason to his wife Sheila and even john's sister. Unfortunately, i did not back these up and have lost them over the years.
RELATED LINKS
For the first time, I actually got up a "links" section. It's all thanks
to my being a slacker that it didn't appear sooner. It's pretty large and
has a lot of fun sites similar to this one.
Well, that's it for now. Thanks for coming to the site!
